New Zealand Timbers
Black Maire Dense, hard, varies in colour from cream to brown with black stripes.
Kowhai A tough, hard timber, variable in colour from mid-brown to grey.
Lacebark Creamy-white with prominent medullary rays which show as flecks on bobbins.
Matai Orange-brown with a very fine finish.
Matipo Pale red with darker red fleck similar to London plane, Fine, even texture.
Pohutukawa Pink, hard with fine even texture.
Puriri Variable in colour from yellow through grey to mid-brown. Hard, with fine even texture.
Rata Pink to purple-brown with fine even texture.
Red Beech Reddish-brown with fine, even texture.
Rewarewa Pinkie-red to dark red with very distinctive ray figure.
Tarata White to grey with black spalting lines.
Tawa White to grey with occasional black streaks. Good lustre.

English Timbers
Apple hard, light pink colour
Ash creamy colour with darker markings, rather coarse texture
Beech hard, light pink-brown with distinctive flecks.
Cherry hard, light pink-red with darker markings.
Holly hard, bone-white to light brown with darker flecks.
Oak hard, light brown with distinctive grain.
Peach similar to cherry.
Plane hard, pink with darker markings- similar to rewarewa but with finer flecks
Plum similar to cherry but darker
Yew hard, very variable in colour but usually orange-brown with darker markings

Backyard exotics
Barberry light yellow sometimes with darker markings
Broom light-yellow brown.
Camellia similar colour to beech but without the flecks
Gorse yellow with prominent flecks
Phebalium surprisingly hard, creamy colour
Privet white, similar to holly
Tree Lucerne light to mid-brown with prominent grain

Australian Timbers
Australian Cherry similar to English cherry- pinky-brown with flecks.
Ironwood very hard smooth, brown timber
Jarrah deep red-brown hardwood
Tasmanian Blackwood reddish brown, often with distinctive markings.

North American Timbers
Black Walnut - deep grey with black markings
Cotinus -deep yellow with dark markings and often an unusual sheen
Maple -white with interesting highlights
Robinia - greeny-yellow with bone white sapwood sometimes with darker markings
